Welcome to our Year 4 Classes

Welcome to Year 4! The children in Year 4 have an exciting term ahead. They have settled in nicely and are already working hard.

Our topic this term is called ‘Road Trip USA!’ We will be exploring all things USA. In geography the children will learn the USA’s location in the world, its cities, terrain and climate. We will look at the history on the USA including native Indians and the arrival of Christopher Columbus.

Our science lessons will be based on electricity including building circuits.

In Maths, we will begin with work on place value and then going on to addition and subtraction.

In English, our focus book this term is ‘Counting on Katherine’ by Helen Becker. This book focuses on the life of Katherine Johnson who played a vital role with he USA putting humans in space and on the moon.

Key dates for your diary:

  • 13th October USA themed afternoon – more information to follow.
  • 29th September INSET Day – school closed to pupils.

PE Day

Year 4 have PE day on a Thursday, children are expected to wear a white round neck t-shirt, black shorts or joggers, black trainers or plimsolls. The children may also wear cardigans or jumpers over the top of the t-shirt on cooler days.

Please ensure all jewellery is removed before school.

Year 4 Expectations

In Year 4, the children are expected to read every night. The school has implemented the Accelerated Reader scheme. Children should complete a comprehension quiz on their reading book at least twice a week in order to make good progress. Please ensure your child has their reading book and reading record in school daily.

Children are expected to learn spellings for a test on Friday morning. We are working hard in class on times tables so any extra support you can give to your child at home is appreciated. We encourage frequent use of mathsframe.co.uk. Your child will also be given a comprehension task to be completed by the following Friday.

All homework tasks are communicated via the orange A4 homework book. This book must be brought in every Friday and new work can be stuck in. Mathematical homework tasks are set each week on Freckle, this a password-protected website and you will find your child’s details inside their reading record.

Wishing you all a safe and successful term,

The Year 4 Team

Timetable

Our timetable can be downloaded below. Here, parents and pupils have the opportunity to view the class schedule to see the day-to-day routine including the range of curriculum that is covered. We have found that children with SEND have responded well to visually seeing the structure of the day ahead.
