In the Sow, Grow and Farm project, we learnt about allotments in the United Kingdom and how the government encouraged people to have them to support food rationing during the Second World War. We also learnt about food webs and animal life cycles, including how living things are dependent on one another within a habitat. We investigated the different ways that plants reproduce and dissected a daffodil to identify the different structures. We learnt about farming in the United Kingdom and the techniques used in modern farming, including the challenges that farmers face. We also learnt about the benefits of eating seasonally and about the pros and cons of importing food. Then finally we explored world farming and how the different climate zones affect where different foods can be grown.
We wrote about the life cycle of a flowering plant, we used technical words such as, fertilisation, dispersal and germination.
We found out that seeds are dispersed by wind, by insects or by animals.
We created a food web for a local allotment, each line is how one organism is linked to another.
Each food web starts with a Producer followed by a Primary Consumer, then a Secondary Consumer, and finally a Tertiary Consumer.
We dissected a daffodil to observe the different parts of a plant’s reproductive system.
First, we removed the petals (these attract the insects to the plant). We could then see the male parts of the plant (stamens) really clearly. Next we looked at the carpel, which contains the female parts of the flower, we peeled away the green sepal to find the carpel. Finally, we looked at the structure of the stem, which holds up the flower and transports sugars and water.
