Learning and caring together, building a firm foundation for the future

Exploring Capacity!

In Mathematics this week Reception have learnt about capacity.  We first learnt about what capacity is, then children learnt the vocabulary that they need to use such as: full, half full and empty, most and least.

Next children have enjoyed putting into practice what they have learnt in Mathematics lessons.

"I have to fill this cup to the top."
"We have an empty cup, a half full cup and a full cup. This is really fun!"

Then we explain that the containers can be refilled with objects such as: sand, cubes and pegs. We made an estimation of how many cubes will need to fill a half cup and a full cup.

          " I have a cup full of objects.  I used 20 cubes."
" The cup is empty."

During independent learning time children have consolidated what they learnt in Mathematics about capacity.

" I have a cup full of pegs and one half full."

We have been learning through play in Mathematics this week. We're explored capacity in our outdoor classroom as well, and we had lots of fun!
