Learning and caring together, building a firm foundation for the future

Divide and Conquer

This week we have been developing a deeper understanding of the process of division.

Our question was  2528 ÷ 8...

First we laid out place value discs to represent our number.

Then we laid out 8 sticks to represent the 8 we would share our 2528 between.

We soon realised we could not share the two 1000 discs between our 8 sticks, so we exchanged each 1000 for ten 100 discs.

Now we could share out our 100 discs between the 8 sticks.

Each stick now had three 100 discs, but that left one disc. We could not cut the disc up, so we exchanged it for ten 10 discs. Now we had twelve 10 discs that we could share between our 8 sticks.

Now we had four 10 discs left over and we had to exchange each one for ten 1 discs! It took four of us to do the job quickly.

Our last job was to share the 1 discs between the 8 sticks fairly.

At the end each stick had 316 when we added up the discs.

2528 ÷ 8 = 316, we had our answer.

We then used the formal method to solve this question.

We hope you can see our deeper learning through our use of Mathematics manipulatives.
