Can we find the difference?
Our focus this week has been associated with finding the difference between two numbers.
We have been rediscovering subtraction vocabulary and learning a few new ones, on our learning journey. We spent time using our knowledge of place value to recognise when we might need to ‘rename’ a place value, in order to complete our calculations.
Using place value counters, we were able to decrease numbers practically and rehearsed our vocabulary as we went along. We challenged Ms. Worrell, about the different ways we could check our calculations.
Five children showed the relationship between a family of numbers – demonstrating the inverse relationships.
“The inverse of subtraction is addition”, shared Sachkeerat.
“So, I had to swapped places with the adding sign. I have the take away sign”, explained Erin.
We will be using bar models to guide the calculations we will need, when we solve word problems, next time.
